Darrell Mann Out as Stangs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations

Today was a day I was hoping  I wouldn't have to hear about since I started covering Hockey in Melfort.

The Melfort Mustangs Board of Directors last night decided not to renew the contract of Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Darrell Mann.

The writing was on the wall at the start of the year that results had to happen for this hockey team to improve their standing in the post season as they've been on the short end of the stick for a few years.

Darrell did what he had to do to win he brought in the players to win a championship in Haygarth early in the season and Brayden Metz and Cody Hanson at the trade deadline this team was looking good before that point anyway, they had big wins over Yorkton and La Ronge before December 10th and January 10th. Manner always had the winning edge in his attitude which is always a plus in a coach, he was liked by the players, yes some players quit but they didn't put their best effort forward so Darrell didn't need to put up with players that weren't gonna put their best into the team, if you're not gonna give it your all why should he?

The Mustangs were a team that was the least penalized team in the Bauer Conference at the Christmas Break, by the end of the season they were in the top three and in the playoffs the breaks didn't go their way or even bounces. In the La Ronge Series to be honest and this takes nothing away from the abilities of the La Ronge Ice Wolves but this series should probably heading into a game seven tonight, but the Mustangs had alot of fire power and just couldn't get a bounce their way, they did leave it all on the ice.

As for Mann as a part of the organization, really stressed on community involvement with the team, the Mustangs went to just about every school in the area and were guests at special events and helped out in many ways. The Mustangs are one of the most profitable teams in the SJHL and will be heading into the black again when their AGM starts before the season Manner had a huge impact there.

Maybe the best point about Darrell is his ability to recruit some great talent he's brought in some great talent or future talent that he won't get to see develop in a Mustang Uniform but just going through some of the list the Prince Albert Mintos who are on their way to the Telus Cup regionals you look at the Sawyer Lange,  Landon Belchamber and Adam Fauchoux, (Tyson Dallman before he got traded to Nipawin) were very capable players on this Mustang Roster for next year... they may still be though with the new coach who ever it may be. This guy knows talent and has buildt this team for the future even with the trades of Levi Cable, Dustin Skilliter and Dallman there's plenty of talent in the rotation.

I think a beneficiary for Manner was his ability to find guys that may have not been the best but he turned them into impact players in certain roles, like a Zach Johnson who was playing Junior B turned into a great role player, the Brant Henry-Norton's, Bo Lenard's and bring Scott Brkich who was and I mean this, going to be sitting in the playoffs before Darrell struck a cord with him and he became the team's playoff MVP he brought out the best in his players that wanted to be great.

From a Broadcasters point of View on Road Trips Manner was a treat to be with him and Cory Unser were awesome on road trips and never turned away from an interview and during some interviews, Yes I make an error once in a while and they would make me sound good for it or politely correct me but when we're off the record they'd let me know what was up which was great, Manner showed me the ropes and got me more into the List players aspect of junior hockey which I had zero knowledge before coming here and of course he had a nickname for me when I got here as I was a little beefy or as Tisdale Trojans Coach Trevor Blevins said I looked like Brutus the Barber Beefcake when I went golfing with Manner and Trevor during the summer so the nickname turned into just BEEF and it's stuck with me as it goes for the Mustangs players too.

The meeting with the Board of Directors yesterday we can confirm it wasn't unanimous just not the vote number I think it came down to one vote we'll never know the final tally but if it did it's unfortunate for that one person to get rid of a local coach who may not have had the best playoff record but the teams he had made money, and brought fans to the palace especially this year as there was almost 2500 fans in the rink for games 3-4 against La Ronge which is pretty impressive and he was a local guy! What more do you want in a coach that's from the area you know the guy is going to stick around? If he did a bad job then fine dismiss him but when he does that for a hockey team playoffs every full season in the fold for the Mustangs, give your head a shake and figure it out I think this is a questionable decision by the board that could cost them dearly down the road. Whoever is the new coach will have some big shoes to fill lets put it that way.

Who is the likely candidate for Darrell Mann's post now? Here are some people that have been thrown around and this is rumor don't get your panties in a knot if it's a current coach that's why its called rumors.

Bob Beatty- Why? Watrous is his home which isn't far from here, lets face it money is a factor why he's in La Ronge could we see Mr. Beatty behind the Melfort Bench? Anything is Possible.

Larry Wintoneak- Dismissed from the Klipps this year could be a suitor.

Gavin Holcomb- Assistant in La Ronge maybe he's looking for his Head Coaching position.

Dave Hrysky- Former Coach of the Hawks I know he applied for the Assistant's Job last year that Cory Unser has now.

Trevor Blevins- Tisdale Trojan Head Coach in SMAAAHL assistant of Mann for 6 years before taking a Head Coaching Job will Mr. Blevins get the Jump to Junior A after one year in Tisdale?

???? Someone out of Province?????? Help me out here and send who you think could be the new bench boss for Melfort.

As for Cory Unser goes a great defensive coach he will be a Head Coach one day but I think if Darrell Mann picks up another job in Saskatchewan or wherever Unser will be going with him they are a great coaching tandem.

Where will Darrell Mann go next?

Some early places say he could be the new man behind the Bench in Estevan where he would work out great still in Saskatchewan as well. I think Estevan would be stupid to not take him.

Kindersley? Is Rockie Zinger safe?

Out of Province??? It would be Alberta or BC just don't know yet who's gonna have openings.

Something I want to bring up and this is just me, why Couldn't he be a GM for Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge? A guy that knows Saskatchewan Junior Hockey well would be a great choice if he's not working behind the bench. Team Canada West hasn't done too well at the past couple of years maybe time for a change.

Wherever he's heading he made my job easier and enjoyable to come to the rink and he always talked to everyone Manner I'll miss ya for that and hope a visiting interview will involve you next season Good Luck and we'll see ya sooner then later... Mostly because you live two blocks away from me and Melfort isn't a metropolis... Yet.

Now What?

Just another brief post here,

Another Junior A Season is done for me, The SJHL Final should be a good rematch, Will La Ronge go to the Anavet Cup for a second straight year or does the Hot Yorkton Terriers get the title this time around? Remains to be seen.

As for me I'll have off season stories for the Hawks, Broncos and Mustangs as their plans for next year start. The Hawks will have their spring camp on April 8-9 and the Broncos will have theirs  on April 15-17, Melfort hasn't announced their camp yet. There will be some announcements for future considerations down the road we'll probably hear about them after the RBC Cup, The Hawks have some futures coming their way as well as Humboldt, We'll find out what Melville is going to get from the Metz and Hanson trade in Melfort. Levi Cable is already a Millionaire who will join him?

So what do I do now? Hockey is over, Junior A anyway probably go to a Blades/Raider Game this week, Football is a couple months away... I have one partial answer Tiger Woods 12 for PS3 with the ability to play Augusta should be sweet, oh and that's that game called OPENING DAY IS MARCH 31 GO RED SOX GO!

I will be golfing sooner then later just hoping. Last year on a trip with a friend of mine from SAIT Broadcasting Tom Roulston who now works at Global Lethbridge to Regina we stopped to visit another classmate and anchor at Global Regina, a Regina product in Heather Anderson great anchor by the way, she said she'd been taking golf lessons at the time last year and Tom and I pretty much said a game is needed now so Heather pick the date we're going golfing... hopefully if snow would just be like the WWE and get the F out.

Just wanting so say a quick good bye and good luck to all the 20 year olds on our local teams this season as they move on to new things.

Andrew Bodnarchuk- HMBT- Sacred Heart College  Commitment.
Owen Roschuk- MELF
Reagan Nabseth-MELF
Scott Brkich- MELF
Brendon Wall- MELF
Brayden Metz-MELF
Cody Hanson- MELF
Brody Haygarth-MELF
Sterling Bear- MELF
Charles Corsi- MELF
Zach Johnson-MELF

Good Luck Guys.

"Classy" Act

It was a tough way to end a season/playoffs and make that series that should have been longer for the Melfort Mustangs after losing 4-2 last night in La Ronge and dropping the series 4-1, Congrats to La Ronge for repeating as champs but this isn't the subject I'm getting to.

Last night Mustangs Head Coach Darrell Mann was ejected from the game in the second through frustrations with officiating Reagan Vetter made the decision to boot him I have nothing on that part of the game but this when I get a little red and give referees no respect and I really tried to give in this situation but can't.

After the game is over, series is over all teams showing great sportsmanship shaking hands, good lucks and other comments for the future... the officials wouldn't allow Darrell Mann to walk on the ice and shake hands with his opponents it's a brutal decision by the officials  to not let him do it, Really Vetter and MacIntosh? Couldn't let the guy walk and congratulate a Bob Beatty instead Bob has to walk all the way over to him and shake hands? I've said it before and I'll say it again officials have it in for some coaches and it showed there. Let the guy finish out the season, that was a classless act or as I like to say Dick Move by the refs for that both Vetter and MacIntosh, I assume there's some rule in the rule book that will agree with them but seriously let it go guys.

I'll do a post Mustang entry next week as now our radio broadcasts are done for another season,  Sigh 5 months till next season... Already counting down the days

It's Not Over Yet

I saw I was getting to the bottom of many blogs for updates and I won't ever be last so here we go a blog on the day off.

If last last night was any implication to how the Melfort Mustangs are played this series beside maybe game 2 this series should probably tied or maybe Melfort up 3-1.

I made the bumble of saying the shot clock was wrong in the second intermission and I got caught on it from a couple of listeners on CK750 but when you hold La Ronge to 1 shot in a period and fire 15 on them and can't score its the hockey gods having their ways. The Mustangs were the better team in game 4 and didn't get the bounces at all, if Brayden Metz, Brody Haygarth or Jesse Mireau hit the net on half their shots the Mustangs win this hockey game, kudos to the La Ronge Ice Wolves though taking nothing away from them Logan Herauf has been great in this series but the key last night was keeping out of the box for Melfort but when the officials make two calls for a 5 on 3 for 2 minutes solid it hurts, were the calls actual calls? Unfortunately for the Mustangs they were and had to be called, it was the turning point of the game and the wolves take a 3-1 series lead back to La Ronge, So the Mustangs will have to do it the hard way if they want to face Yorkton in the Credit Union Cup Final.

The Mustangs did leave it all on the ice and its tough to see them not getting rewarded but I believe as they say get a lucky bounce and your back in it, why not the Mel Hegland Uniplex where it bounces everywhere that is what they need and can get it against an Ice Wolves team that is probably hurting a little bit as are Melfort but anything can happen.

I wish I was going to game five but we're short staffed at work right now so I can't get away to do colour with Darryl but we'll have the game at 7:15 with the Pre-game show and puckdrop at 7:30 on CK750 and CK750.com should be a good one and expect an absolute war between Melfort and La Ronge as the Stangs try to stay alive.

On to another subject I made a poll on who is the Coach of the Year in the SJHL and the official nominees were Bob Beatty of LA, Dean Brockman of HMBT and Trent Cassan of YKT.

The results.... A tie

Beatty - 7 votes

Brockman- Votes 7

Cassan- 4 Votes

All coaches well deserving after the regular season they had, if I had to go playoffs though which isn't a factor I believe Trent Cassan would get it but since it was a tie have to break the deadlock and I'm going with Mr. Beatty he's a great coach with a good team and he's well... Bob Beatty really nice guy I've talked to him before each game here in Melfort I don't think he knows my name but he knows where I work so we've very concise but great hockey chats Bob has a lot of respect for his opponents as I've seen in this series.

As for other little things I think my Flames are out sigh... Go Hurricanes I guess, as long as Toronto misses the playoff I can sleep well. Who is the Hart Trophy Winner? Stamkos? Sedin? Perry... I'd love to see that for people that say he's just a benefactor of Ryan Getzlaf go Corey.

A new poll will be up soon so stay tuned. MLB Opening Day is among us Mar 31! Go Red Sox Go I'm saying a Phillies/Red Sox World Series

Holy Cow what a series so far Batman!

Happy Monday Everyone... I know its Monday sorry but!!! I got it off so Monday is cool today.

Best of 7 Bauer Conference Semi Finals Humboldt Vs Melfort

Series tied at 1-1

Got back from the Elgar Peterson Arena last night it was a crazy atmosphere for fans both Melfort and Humboldt to see, wasn't too sure what was gonna happen or how many players would be left on respective benches. The game had just about everything clean hits, late hits, dirty hits, cheeky stunts, goals and angry hateful fans I was shaking in excitement with Melville Millionaires Coach Jamie Fiesel who made the trip to watch 3 future players of his, who they are remains to be seen.

The game was out of control in the first period penalties galore, and there was no order, calls were made and some calls that probably should be made weren't  there was I think the positive from that period it didn't cost either team the game and the Broncos and Mustangs were tied at one after one but a double minor put the Mustangs at a disadvantage and the Broncos started the period on a 5 on 3 they've had a good power all season their first goal was on the PP from Greg Ferguson but the Mustang's PK was very good and it has been since January and that really swung the momentum into their favor. The reffing and play did calm down in periods 2 and 3.

Brayden Metz scored on the PP to take the lead then it was Sean Aschim that has had Andrew Bodnarchuk's number he's buried it before on the 20 year old and he would get the hat-trick and seal the Bronco's fate for a 5-1 win.

The Broncos missed opportunities to score and Melfort didn't and got the bounces kind of the story from game 1 for both clubs again shots were 26 all that was the weird part. I think the Broncos got hit so hard and often I think they ran out of gas a bit which may not be good down the stretch if this series goes long. The Mustangs could have easily lost this game with the way penalties were handed out but their PK and Charles Corsi did their thing and shut everything down.

Sterling Bear was inserted into the line-up and both Darrell Mann and Cory Unser said he was the best player on the ice for the Mustangs, Bear scored the opening goal on a great shot, took a couple of bad penalties but he got under the Broncos skin and sometimes brought somebody with him to the box he was the X Factor in this game and with that became public enemy number one in Humboldt. It will be interesting to see how the Broncos can respond from a game like this with their youngsters Dean Brockman I'm sure has a plan for game three in Melfort.

Game three is on CK750 special start time at 7:10 with the pre-game show it will be Darryl Skender with the play by play, Dwight Kulchisky with colour and I'll be between the benches for game three we tried it in Prince Albert in December it didn't work hopefully it will should be fun. As Mitchell Blair says, great the SJHL has a Pierre McGuire. Another note I'm on CJNB's Sports fix with Battleford Play by Play man Dan O'Connor it will be an interesting show we'll have lots to talk about.

That's gonna do it today time to finish cleaning the homestead and probably play video games. Tweet me @gdp74 or e-mail me at gino.depaoli@cjvr.com I answer all e-mails and I'll say this before I leave, GO FLAMES GO!!!!
