NHL Mid Season Awards

Well its at that time where we're over the half way point of the NHL Season and All-star weekend I'm going to like two out of three things the Draft tomorrow and the Skills competition I've always liked the Skills competition then the actual game ever but back in the late 90's was pretty good where the all-star game was pretty sweet favorite moments, Ray Bourque winning MVP in Boston in 96, Owen Nolan's point on Dominik Hasek in 97, Al MacInnis dominating the Hardest Shot Competition and seeing just a little bit of care in the All-star game a little bit.

Who will win after last night's picks? Team Staal or Team Lidstrom? I hope team Staal because if you didn't know I'm a big Eric Staal Fan and always will be.

Onto the Awards, I'm only doing ones that really stick out.

Calder Trophy

Nominees

G- Sergei Bobrovsky, Philadelphia Flyers

Stats, 21-6-3, 920 Save %, 2.42 GAA

This guy has been lights out for Philadelphia earned the starting job on a Philly team that looks better then last year I just hopes he doesn't turn the "Net Detective 3" number 2 is Steve Mason and looks to keep that name, somewhere Jonathan Bernier is saying Karma is a bitch Steve. But Sergei nicely done.

C- Jeff Skinner , Carolina Hurricanes

Stats, 18 Goals, 22 Assists, Drafted 7th Overall in 2010 Draft and has been the second best player on the team the former Kitchener Ranger has been something else this year seen him a couple of games is looking like his captain in a way.

C- Logan Couture, San Jose Sharks

Stats, 22 Goals, 11 Assists, Stats a bit lower then Skinner's but they'd probably be a lot higher if he wasn't hurt for a little bit and playing with the likes of Heatley, Thornton and Marleau above him but he gets good playing time and is developing quite, Dear Toronto was it worth it for Owen Nolan?? HA suckers.

Winner: Bobrovsky

HM's Cam Fowler ANA, P.K Subban MTL and Kevin Shattenkirk COL.

Norris Trophy

Nickas Lidstrom, Detroit Red Wings

Stats, 11 Goals, 32 Assists, Wow... thats all I can say about him he gets even better with age and he's 40 now will he be a Chris Chelios? I doubt it but at this rate it seems he could play till 43 maybe, UFA at the end of the year will he be cheap and stay in Detroit? Go somewhere else? or Retire and ride off into the sunset and wait for his call to the HOF? What it is it's been awesome this year Nik.

Shea Weber, Nashville Predators

Stats, 9 Goals, 21 Assists, He has been lights out for a long time and I haven't given him enough due, This year he does kind of a long shot but he has done everything in Nashville with an underrated team with over rated results he's a winner too bad he won't win a cup in Nashville he might have to be traded or waive a no trade if he wants to be a contender but maybe Barry Trotz can get it done this year.

Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks

Stats, 2 Goals, 25 Assists, I know what your gonna say WTF De Paoli??? Well I am a fan but If you look at Keith's Stats and the way he started the season his +/- was way down but has come up but the Hawks will heat up if they can get their goaltending together they might get a better seed in the playoffs Maybe Corey Crawford is a short term or long term answer, either way when his team doesn't help Keith gets the blunt end of the problems cause he's on the ice so much but Keith is for real.

Winner: Lidstrom

HM's Dustin Byfuglien ATL, After a nice sit down with the Voice of the Battlefords Northstars Dan O'Conner he has shown me the light and now an HM is Keith Yandle of PHX another Keith related defenceman, Kris Letang PIT

Vezina Trophy

Tim Thomas, Boston Bruins

Stats, 24-5-6, 7 SO's 1.81 GAA, .945 Save Percentage

He's back..... and better then ever as the 2009 winner he's heading to the All-star game again and is a fighter when it comes to keeping his job this was Tuukka Rask's job at the start of the year and Timmy T is leading the B's back to the promised land maybe further this time.

Jonas Hiller, Anaheim Ducks

Stats, 25-16-3, 2.50 GAA, .926 Save Percentage

This guy stops everything ever since the Olympics he may be the new Miikka Kiprusoff for getting peppered and winning games he is the Ducks' MVP and has them right where they need to be... In a playoff spot he never gives up on a play, Makes 40 saves a game no big deal! Saw his glasses yesterday wow ugly.

Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers

Stats, 21-16-3, 2.29 GAA, .924 Save %

King Henrik is back after a so so season even though he still had thirty wins, he has been well... Henrik Lundqvist he is one goalie I wish i always draft in fantasy leagues he is one of the best first years in the league was a nominee hopefully he gets one and I'd kill to have one of his suits wow Barney Stinson would be proud.

Winner: Hiller

HM's Carey Price MTL, Marc Andre Fleury PIT and Cam Ward CAR

Hart Trophy

Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins

Stats, 32 Goals, 34 Assists, He is the best player in the NHL and being out for 9 games and missing the all-star game I think that I have to say he'd be close to 80 points of not for two concussions in retrospect form Dave Steckel and Viktor Hedman. Sid had jumped up in my respect he scored the golden goal, it was weak but he scored it and I think the offseason where he was done after being upset by the Habs just gave him time to reload and relax a bit and he's showed it.

Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning

Stats, 38 Goals, 29 Assists

How good is this kid what a one timer and Steve Yzerman has been an influence and the Lightning seem to be back to the way things were Stamkos is just that it's only year 3 of his career can you imagine him a couple more years some records could be broke if he has the right guys around him and the Tampa power play is nothing without him.

Brad Richards, Dallas Stars

Richards has brought himself into the NHL's elite after all he did win the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2004 (dammit) but look at what he's done in Dallas if Kari Lehtonen can stay hot and win a few games for Dallas in the playoffs the Stars could turn heads and Richards is a main reason why and he should get recognized for his efforts.

Winner: Too close to tell but Sidney Crosby if he stays healthy and up pace in points obviously or I'd love to see Richards get the surprise vote

HM's I know someone will say why he wasn't a nominee of mine, Ryan Kesler VAN, Henrik Sedin, VAN, Tim Thomas BOS

Well thats that if you disagree with these at all I want to hear about it, leave a message here, email gino.depaoli@cjvr.com or tweet me @gdp74

Melfort plays Battleford at home tonight webcast should be a good one I'll have a report tomorrow from the game.

Not a Good Start to the Week

It's been a while since I've been on here but it has been a crappy few hours today for myself and for ourselves at work.

Monday was actually a pretty decent day, quiet in local sports for myself but a busy news day for us and then it was having a duel with my boss Ken Singer on Tiger 11 of course our golf guru got the best of me by 2 strokes well played sir, then capped off with a long lingering go at Goals Gym here in Melfort.

Some of you that know are probably wondering Gino and the Gym, Why? Well my sister is getting married at the end of April and I want to look stronger and in better shape for it, the funny thing is the RBC Cup in Camrose starts that day and the representative for team West would play the next day which could see one of our local teams there so apologies in advance for the De Paoli/Welsh Wedding if I'm scoreboard watching while performing my MC duties. HA could you imagine?

On to Today

Way back before I even came to Fabmar Communications for work there had been a bid for a radio station in Humboldt and the station from what I saw put their heart and soul into the bid for the station in the home of the Broncos and after the hearings that we got to listen in on it sounded like we had a pretty good shot to get the station since we are a huge contributor to many organizations, businesses and of course covering The Humboldt Broncos.

We were told yesterday decision by the CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission) In layman's terms the Big Boys would have their decision to whether we would get the station or Golden West Radio those were the final two bidders. Got a text this morning from our news girl saying we didn't get the bid and Golden West did, it was a shock for all of us we thought we had it with everything we've done.

It sucks but the CRTC made their decision and have to take the licks and move on, that whole story, we aren't going anywhere and we still have a great reputation and always will we've been doing the radio thing for 44 years and there's great people here so don't think for a micro second our coverage of sports teams will diminish, but only get better as this has motivated me to step my game up and make our station even better then before. If you want some? Come Get Some!! I guess thats the gym coming out in me lol

What happened to you Tuesday? you used to be Monday's cool brother now your just a spitting image of  your evil brother Monday you can ride shotgun with Monday to hell Tuesday.

Onto Sports....

The Melfort Mustangs renew their rivalry with the Humboldt Broncos at the Elgar Peterson Arena tonight these teams haven't played since the HOF Game November 26 when there was a brawl right at the end of the game after a big hit on Chase Wharton from Brody Haygarth where there was fights, coaches getting into it and Ward Szucki fish hooking a Mustang player causing him to get a two game suspension but that was then and this is now teams are are totally changed Humboldt trading away on Jan 10 and Melfort loading up so it could be an ugly game unless Dean Brockman has prepared his team well which he usually does its usually a good atmosphere with these two... they hate each other should be good it's on CK750 tonight starting at 7:15 with the Pre-game show and 7:30 Puckdrop.

The best part they'll play again Friday in Melfort. The Mustangs will also face a possible playoff match-up with the Battlefords North Stars Saturday this will only be the second time I've seen the Stars play the Mustangs really need to see what they're like they had a  bad start start to the season but have turned it on lately  and could finish as high as third they're one point back of Humboldt for third in the Bauer.

As for the Nipawin Hawks, they've got 12 games left 4 points back of the Flin Flon Bombers for 5th in the Bauer and the final playoff spot, tonight in Nipawin the Hawks have a chance to gain some ground, the Bombers do have games in hand but anything can happen, If Nipawin is to make the playoffs they'll need to win 7-8 of their last twelve to ensure a spot in my view, they can do it they've beaten good teams and if goaltending can get hot again there's a chance for the Hawks to make noise it will be well earned if it happens Doug Johnson has dealt with many things this year, this would maybe sweep most of it away.

Poll Results

I asked who is the best goalie in the SJHL and there might be some Notre Dame fans reading the Debacle cause Russell Abbott who is also this week's goalie of the week for the league won the poll getting 50 percent of the votes, The numbers don't lie 11-14-3 .911 Save%, 2.73 GAA and two shutouts on a weaker Hounds team, the sad thing is I haven't seen him play this year I've seen Matthew Smidt play every local game so I couldn't get a good grasp but from people I've talked to he's something else to watch. Good job Russell maybe your goaltending can get ND into the playoffs.

Charles Corsi got 31 percent of the votes for what has been a great season and he maybe the league MVP this year according to this broadcaster 21-8-3, .922 Save%, 2.53 GAA and 2 shutouts not too shabby for the Rosemere Quebec Native. Chuck tells me his family watches every webcast and likes our product at the MBN (Mustang Broadcasting Network)  so a shout out to the Corsi family.

Others getting votes were Weyburn's Mitch Kilgore, Kindersley's Sean Cahill and Devin Peters of the Yorkton Terriers.

Well its only Tuesday but its gonna get crazy with Long Lake Hockey tonight, last broadcast of the year with Dan Bushman doing colour with me on CJVR plus Webcast on Saturday, Coaches Show Saturday at Escape in Melfort, some drinks, The Gym and other fun stuff no rest for the wicked have a great day everyone and stay tuned for a new poll question.

Poll Results, Klippers/Mustangs Game

The First of many polls is in the De Paoli Debacle is in the books and we have a split decision.

The Poll question was "Out of the Top 4 Teams in the SJHL who has the best chance to win the Credit Union Cup?"

The Choices were

Yorkton     5 Votes

La Ronge   2 Votes

Melfort       5 Votes

Kindersley  1 Vote

Upset in the Making 1 Vote.

So those who voted it was a small number but they think a Yorkton/Melfort final is brewing which is what I think it will be, Kindersley did play the Mustangs tough last night and the final score was 4-3, the score I predicted, good goaltending at both ends with Corsi and Cahill it was a playoff game with some questionable calls but just the one referee tonight I don't he could keep up to the play but you play through I give full credit for the KK's for their work effort they might catch Yorkton for number one in the Sherwood it will be tough but it will be a close race.

The Mustangs played for 55 minutes last night and the last five could have killed them with penalties but Cody Hanson was unreal with Metz on the power its like they know where they're gonna be... HMMM but I tip my cap to Brett Kipling stepping up for Johnny Badura after he got crunched into the boards on a late hit by Jesse Mysiorik gets cut up, tells the coaching staff I gotta got to the hospital I'll be back, gets stitched up can remember how many but he's back out there playing his heart out! Great determination also Owen Roschuk playing with rib problems and shoulder problems was a monster out there must have had 8 big hits in that game, Also Conner Bradshaw had a solid effort a great penalty killer and was clutch when the Mustangs when killing off a 6-4 PP near the end of the game.

Scott Brkich got a little banged up took a hit and just got turned around the wrong way we'll see his status for tomorrow night it is a game against the Hounds that could be a night off for him and Zach Johnson might be in he is fighting some back problems but Zach is tough and could probably play through the pain. Also Brody Haygarth could return tomorrow or Darrell Mann may wait to get him back in the line-up Tuesday against Yorkton. The Mustangs are playing well without Haygarth in the line up since New Year's day imagine where they could be with him healthy and not hurt... its scary.

3 Stars from the night

1. Cody Hanson  Melfort, 2 goals on the night including the winner a great debut.

2. Sean Aschim   Melfort, Got a goal and was a force may be one of the most underrated Centres in the  league, he's been a point a game player all year and the best part about him stats are secondary he wants to win and that's something thats hard to find in players at times.

3. Sean Cahill      Kindersley

39 saves on 43 shots it could have been a run away if it wasn't him in between pipes robs Spencer Mault on a wide open shot in the second and just on power plays positioned himself very well he has improved a lot since I saw him last year in the Playoffs last year with Oilers. A solid effort from the Calgary product who is on his way to Alaska Fairbanks next year in the NCAA.

It was nice to catch up with Sean after the game he was dealt a bad hand at the start of the year with the Okotoks Oilers trading him at the start of the season to Brooks, then he was sent to Quesnel of the BCHL before coming to Kindersley he has really excelled as the starter in the SJHL he could be the MVP for the Klippers for their turn around also Rockie Zinger has helped him out a lot
Melfort is back in action tomorrow against the Notre Dame Hounds, the Hounds are a good defensive team so no slouch here for the Blue, Green and White and we'll see the status of Brkich for tomorrow and see if Jesse Ehnisz gets the start or if Charles Corsi goes again. Should be a good one I'll have a mini preview tomorrow.

We'll be on the air at 7:25ish for 7:30 Puckdrop on the Webcast go to the Mustangs website and follow the links for live action.

SJHL This Weekend/Klippers/Mustangs

Hey Guys,

I gave myself a few days off from this as I was kind of tired and wasn't doing anything with teams except radio stuff and you guys hear that anyway on CK750 right????? Whatever if you don't listen you don't listen. I'm not gonna make you cause thats not

I'll blog its way more fun I used to hate blogs but now its great for getting stuff out there I've noticed.

As it goes for local teams Nipawin is on the road for three in pretty much a must win situation from now until the conclusion of the season games in hand on Battleford they have to make it count or else another shortened season for the Black and Gold. Unfortunately it hasn't started good for them losing 6-0 to Notre Dame, The Hounds are now 4-0 against Nipawin this year, Games on CK750 this weekend as they're in Weyburn tomorrow and Estevan on Saturday Night.  It will be an interesting bus ride to the hotel tonight.

Humboldt is in an interesting situation youth movement like Nipawin lost tonight to La Ronge but I've discovered that Beatty's Boys only work when the top line is scoring yes tonight it was the 2,3 and 4th lines tonight but Dean Brockman's crew shut them down and if there was scoring touch from Humboldt right now that game goes to the Green and Gold, Here's my question to the Wolves whatcha gonna do brother? When the Melfort Mustang's Defense core and Goaltending and if you get past them the Yorkton Terriers run wild on Lindensmith, Carre and Eggum and the rest of the gang??? There better be something special in the water in La Ronge if you want to repeat as champs.

Back to Humboldt for a moment I think if Hrynkiew and Bodnarchuk can get games back to the way they were the Broncos will stay in 3rd if they don't they'll be survivor series and anything can happen there. The Match-up will be Flin Flon or Nipawin both would be great series.

Humboldt hosts the red hot Klippers on Sunday we'll see what transpires there the Klips have been all right lately a sleeper almost except they're 2nd in the Sherwood Conference.

Now I'll be doing webcasts for the Mustangs this weekend as the Mustangs host Kinderlsey tomorrow and Notre Dame Sunday.

This is a great match-up it was last time and should be again and we'll see a goalie battle between Charles Corsi and Sean Cahill. Cahill could be a sleeper for good goalie records if he keeps it up he was good with Okotoks last year and has started out in fine form going 8-4 and was the December SJHL Goalie of the Month and Charles Corsi has been well.... Charles Corsi a front runner for MVP of the League.

Here's the Tale of the Tape

Offense

Kinderlsey has been lights out scoring in bunches with the likes of Dommett  Calkins, Adamyk, King and always dangerous and one of my favorite players to watch in Taylor Duzan but there is a wild card in Spencer Braaten has leadership qualities and can score my question is.... how's the ankle? Is it in game shape.

As for the Mustangs well Brayden Metz has been great since since coming over from the Mils, Cody Hanson will debut tomorrow, Jesse Mireau 27 goals on the year with Sean Aschim setting him up plus scorers by committee on given nights, Wihak, Nabseth, Threndyle and Mault. Haygarth is still out with a shoulder injury apparently another week we'll find out tomorrow from Darrell Mann.

I'll give the advantage to Melfort by a hair due to how well the Klipps have played.

Defense

Flanigan, Leedahl and Dunn... Sorry fellas you've been good lately but Mitch and Carter Berg, Brkich, Christensen, Kipling, Badura, Johnson and when healthy Brenden Wall the D's don't match up.

Hands down advantage to Melfort.

Goaltending

Cahill has been solid we went over this and is getting better, Corsi well rested but is his groin still a little sore? we'll find out soon.

It's a draw here.

Overall it looks like Melfort should run over Kinderlsey but I don't think it will happen it think we're in for a beauty at the Palace tomorrow night, I'll say 4-3 Mustangs unless Corsi tries to score from centre again and score he's been close a couple of times, then maybe 5-3.

One more note for fans at the Palace.... GET LOUD AND EXCITED!!!! too many times I can hear a pin drop or every word Darrell Mann is saying and sometimes it's of the colourful nature but a great team this year they need devoted fans that will get crazy on a Friday night. Are you busy on a Friday night when it's cold in Melfort??? No your at home warming up lets change that and get crazy down there playoffs are coming and a loud Palace would be a site. I think the Green Army fans of the Okotoks Oilers of the AJHL need to show the Mustangs fans the path to awesome cheering fans.

Hope to see you at the rink say hi before I go up to the booth or in between periods.

Final Piece of the Puzzle in Place for the Mustangs?

No joke on the site.

The Melfort Mustangs have been able to bring in Carter Berg from the Calgary Hitmen as the WHL was on deadline and roster cut off.

Carter is the younger brother of Mustangs Defenseman Mitch Berg so the post below for the D-core of the Stangs just got BERGED.

In no particular line order

M. Berg     C. Berg

Brkich       Christensen

Johnson     Kipling

Johnny Badura 7th D-man 13th forward hybrid he does it all.

Once again just confirmation from Darrell Mann hope to have audio in the morning

Through 36 games in limited playing time with the defending WHL Champs Berg had 2 goals and an Assist along with 46 penalty minutes but was playing forward should feel comfortable on the Mustangs Blue Line.

Stick around two and a half hours left before midnight it's been crazy, lets crank it up to 11!!! With more madness.

Melfort Mustangs Move 20 Year Old

Update from Melfort Camp

Defenseman Josh Martin has been traded to the Canmore Eagles of the AJHL for future considerations.

Martin big Defenseman just turned into the odd man out in Melfort with the likes of the new acquisitions on the back end.

Brkich       Johnson

Wall          Berg

Christensen  Kipling

Johnny Badura

Quick note on the Mustangs website defenseman Carter Berg of the Calgary Hitmen is on the Mustangs roster trying to get a confirmation from Darrell Mann but this would blow the Bauer wide open if true.

Stay tuned

Trades not related to Nipawin/Melfort/Humboldt

Hey guys,

Its been a busy 72 hours and we still have 3 hours to go for the SJHL Trade Deadline to expire it's been a busy one. You've seen the local team trades lets breakdown what I know right now.

Early Reports from La Ronge

The Ice Wolves have acquired Former Humboldt Bronco Nick Keller from the Swan Valley Stampeders for future considerations, should be posted on the SJHL site soon.

North Battleford

Acquired former Melfort Mustangs Cole Gibson from Estevan for future considerations

Trade Forward Dane Muench to the defending RBC Cup Champs Vernon Vipers of the BCHL for future considerations.

The Stars trade Travis Cech to the Selkirk Steelers of the MJHL for Future Considerations

Acquire Nick Scott from the Bonnyville Pontiacs for future considerations

Estevan

Trade Goalie Derek Tendler to Winnipeg Saints for future considerations

Nipawin Hawks Trade Captain

The Nipawin Hawks are now by far the youngest team in the SJHL with their latest transaction.

The team has announced Nipawin Native Brent Remenda has been traded to the Yorkton Terriers for 16 year old prospect Defenseman Travis Baber, Future Considerations and Cash Considerations.

Once again on of those deals where the Hawks are loading up their list players which was non existent  now with futures from Dauphin, Estevan,  Bonnyville of the AJHL,Winkler of the MJHL and now you add Yorkton to the list the future is bright in Nipawin.

Remenda started the season on the shelf with mono and in the 25 games he's played this year he's notched 2 goals and 9 assists along with leading the team in PIMS with 93 he is one tough customer and a big minute guy if Davis Vandane stays up with the Spokane Chiefs.

The Terriers are hurting right now and playing with two AP Twins in the Norrish brothers who look like they should be playing peewee but didn't do a bad job as APs, Great pick-up for Trent Cassan as he now has alot of weapons up front and some toughness that he was lacking.

 What Nipawin Gets

There's no picture of Baber but Nipawin gets another young defenseman he's got 1 goal in 4 games but he's a 16 year old so not much you can say here, Trent and Hawks HC and GM Doug Johnson have developed a good relationship so this is a win for both teams.

AP Players picked up by Nipawin this year:

Dustin Skilliter YRK 94- Brkich Deal
Tyson Dallman PA    94- Brkich Deal
Tyler Mueller    MJ    94- Ceci Deal
Colton Schick   MJ    94- Ceci Deal

We've got a few hours to go gonna be fun till the next trade, trust me there will be more. Audio to follow with Doug Johnson tomorrow

Mustang Report

An Update on what's going on with the Mustangs and a summary of last week's deals/activities and other Mustang related subjects

Here's Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Darrell Mann

Nipawin Hawks Trade Centre to Bruins

Another trade to tell you about in SJHL as revolves around our local teams we cover.

The Nipawin Hawks have traded Centre Jonathan Ceci to the Estevan Bruins for two 94 list players in Tyler Mueller and Colton Schick and future considerations next season.

Here's Head Coach and GM Doug Johnson on the trade today.

In 36 games the North Vancouver native racked up 18 goals and 27 assists for 45 points and he like Spafford picked his game up at the SJHL Showcase in Weyburn and won the SJHL's player of the month award, great play maker and should be a top centre in Estevan.

That leaves only one 20 year old left on the Hawks roster in captain and Nipawin Native Brent Remenda I believe this is the last we'll hear from the Hawks unless something comes to Doug that he can't refuse on.

Till the next trade

GDP

Nipawin Hawks Swing a Sunday Deal

Trade Update in the SJHL.
The Nipawin Hawks have made a trade to improve their franchise down the road.
I spoke with Head Coach and General Manager with the Hawks Doug Johnson the deal has just finalized.

Spafford really picked up his game after they beat Humboldt 6-2 at the Showcase back in December in 38 games played 13 goals and 33 assists for 46 points and was 11th in scoring. Watch for the possibility of one more trade in Nipawin come midnight tonight. Tough to see Spafford go he was a great guy to talk to on the bus during road trips and is a very good player when called upon but thats the price of being a GM no easy days especially right now.

For the player coming into the fold for the remaining 20 games in Jeremy Peeke in 37 games with Dauphin he has 8 goals and 17 assists for 25 points and it will be a great addition to the Hawks Doug Johnson gets the most out of his players and Peeke will be no different. Things are looking good in Nipawin and hey don't look now but the Hawks are 7 points back of Humboldt for 3rd in the Bauer interesting couple months left should be fun up in Nipawin
Keep Checking the Blog out as it's gonna full of trades I'm sure this won't be last trade I talk about.

Mustangs Add Another Melville Millionaire

The Trade Madness continues...

The Melfort Mustangs are at it again as they acquired the 20 year old on the Millionaire's trade block in Cody Hanson for future considerations including AP Player Levi Cable as the Mustangs look to add to the roster full of experience for the playoff drive they sit in second after getting 4 of a possible 6 points in their southern road swing in Weyburn, Estevan and Notre Dame... apparently should have been perfect again but what are you gonna do.

Hanson's stats through 37 games he's got 20 goals and 17 assists so another point a game guy I'm sure he'll get the same speech that Brayden Metz got in being not a saviour just a member of the team.

I will have audio tomorrow morning with Darrell Mann about this trade and the Mustang Report!

Hanson is good fit with the Mustangs as he will reunite with his roommate and former captain in Metz,  He fits the Mustangs system, I'm curious to see where Hanson will play, As Darryl Skender has quoted it the MMA line in Mireau, Metz and Aschim were lights out this weekend 13 points total in the 2 games they were together for and Metz also had a goal in the 2-1 loss to Weyburn.

They seem to be on track I wouldn't want to mess with a good thing but knowing the Mustangs they'll juggle chemistry so everyone can play with anyone on any given night.  Brody Haygarth is having shoulder problems the original plan was for him to play with Metz, I'm sure at one point that will happen its up in the air for lines right now down the stretch.

The Mustangs are off till Friday when they host Kindersley plenty of time to rest and heal. Reagan Nabseth is out with a separated shoulder for 6 weeks, Connor Bradshaw is banged up, Haygarth more time to heal maybe take some light practice, give Jesse Ehnisz time to heal his ankle sprain and Charles Corsi for some more rest and heal a sore groin.

The Mustangs are then back in action Sunday against Notre Dame.

That's the latest from the CK750 Trade Centre,  Nipawin has been busy and I'm sure Humboldt has a couple phone calls that will turn into trades. Till the next post

Darryl Sittler Interview

Bloggers here's something fun to listen as your waiting for Trades to happen in the SJHL.

Back in November Toronto Maple Leafs Legend Darryl Sittler stopped by the station for an interview on the way to a fundraiser for the Star City Geothermal Rink and I have to say I was nervous and excited to have the opportunity to speak to a legend and we were able to shoot the shit about Flames/Maple Leaf deals of course he won em all. One thing I have to say from this conversation off the record I asked him about Dion Phaneuf being the Buds captain and he said "I hope it works" so that was fun to talk about.

Classy Guy and the only Leaf safe from insults from me and he knows that.

So without further adieu Mr. Darryl Sittler

An Update from the SJHL Trade Centre

Top of the Morning to ya bloggers.

The Humboldt Broncos were at it again sending Spencer Braaten to the Kindersley Klippers for once again for Future Considerations.

Same old story the RBC is next year Dean Brockman wants to be successful next year hosting the big dance can you blame him? Talked to Dean yesterday its been a tough couple of days for the GM he stands by his players not an easy thing to do with the likes of now Braaten who has RBC Cup experience and also earlier Nick Keller, Riley Gillies and the Blockbuster to Yorkton that has Justin Buzzeo and Jeremy Boyer dawning the Terrier Orange and Black.

That leaves only Andrew Bodnarchuk as the only 20 year old left on the Broncos roster if he's gone by tomorrow night Humboldt would be the youngest team in the league... even younger then Nipawin.

Where will last year's MVP go? Its hard to say at this point.

As trades become available I will be on the phone for the majority of the day tomorrow trying to keep things current it should be interesting, Will Melfort make a splash with the boys getting a couple of injuries in the first couple of game on their road trip? Does Nipawin add something as you look at the standings the Hawks are in 6th but are 7 points back of Humboldt for third it could be one of those years where anything can happen. Will Humboldt make a charge with young guns in the fold? It's worked for Nipawin and as you see below it's going to be fun down the stretch in the Bauer Conference.

Humboldt Broncos Selling on January 7/2011

Good Evening Everyone,
I've moved blogs again I've enjoyed my time with Wordpress but after seeing the abilities that Play by Play Guys like GX94's Craig Stein, Dan O'Connor and SJHL Communications Director Mitchell Blair have done with their blogs, great great ones by the way guys. I'm back here on Blog Spot I can add audio to my work and make this blog way more exciting, no way in hell am I gonna pay for some audio on a blog site.
I will bring back some posts I did back in December and last week to just keep things afloat.
Now onto a busy day at the Fabmar Trade Centre as I'm calling my desk till January 11th, we started off with excitement with the Mustangs acquiring Melville Millionaires Centre Brayden Metz and Nipawin adding another defenseman in Jeff Clark to the Humboldt Broncos trading their top guns in order to be successful for the RBC Cup next year in Humboldt.

Out are Justin Buzzeo and Jeremy Boyer to the Yorkton Terriers for a couple of future considerations I'm sure everyone has a good idea of what they might be but cannot say for professional purposes, The Terriers with this deal have won the Sherwood Conference as they'll have scorers in the top five in league scoring along with Clarke Breitkreuz and Robbie Cholfi it will be the Yorkton Terriers Vs Who from the Bauer Conference in the Credit Union Cup. Great deal for both teams Trent Cassan this year and Dean Brockman next year.
Dean wasn't finished as he sent hard working forward Nick Keller to the Swan Valley Stampeders of the MJHL for futures I liked watching Keller was always working may not have been the most skilled player but a great kid best of luck to him.
Also Dean sent Riley Gillies to the Dauphin Kings also of the MJHL Gillies was a good player just in the wrong place at the wrong time for him. Dean has given up alot in these deals and he will get plenty back next year and he's not done yet wouldn't be surprised if Andrew Bodnarchuk had a new home come Jan 10th.

                                                                            Interview Done at 1:00 PM

I was able to to speak to Dean today after his morning skate w the boys and it was a tough conversation to have but the price of doing business check out the interview below.
I will be updating more posts from the past check em out and there will be audio and tons of fun stuff to listen to coming soon.

SJHL Showcase Review and Report

It was an intense weekend down in Weyburn and a Legen…. wait for it DARY!!! Weekend,  I literally got bitch slapped with Hockey this past weekend but it was the best experience so far in my broadcasting career and a lot of work but… not as much anymore.

Since Mitchell Blair came on as the Communications Director for the League your notes/ stat sheets are the absolute best Mitchell keep up the good work, check out his blog at www.blair-necessities.blogspot.com some interesting stuff he talks about and a WWE Fan so always a thumbs up in my book Mitchell.
As for the Showcase it was entertaining there was tight nail bitters and there was a couple of surprises as well this weekend had everything, 12 games, 79 total goals scored, 479 penalty minutes and a shoot-out.

The team that impressed me the most that weekend was the Yorkton Terriers in my mind the way they played against Melfort in what was one of the best games during the weekend Trent Cassan has created a silent monster, I say silent because the Terriers have done everything under the radar and they have that I don’t care what you’ve done mentality Clarke Breitkreuz, Robbie Ciolfi and Brent Struble are the second best line in the SJHL right now behind of course La Ronge’s Doug Lindensmith, Marc-Andre Carre who makes everything happen on that line and Travis Eggum who has the most due to the fact that everyone forgets about them cause they’re too worried about the other two on the line.
But Yorkton is the team to beat I say this as when they play Melfort they out work them and when the Mustangs play La Ronge the Wolves lose they won once cause Charles Corsi wasn’t in net.
Weyburn had a strong showcase going 2-0 as well as La Ronge but they could have easily lost to Battlefords pending a collapse in the 3rd by the Stars and Kindersley impressed me this weekend after getting thumped by the Stars Larry Wintoneak’s crew battled back against a hot Flin Flon Bombers who come into that game winners of 7 straight, they changed their plan after being down 1-0 after one, got the tying goal late with 6 attackers against a PJ Musico who wouldn’t anything in then in overtime take a penalty and Jordan Hoffman steals a pass and burns the Bombers Shorthanded for the W.

Watch out for the Klippers in the home stretch of the season. Special shout out to Sean Cahill of Kindersley who was an Okotoks Oiler last year when I did colour there he could the goalie that goes under the radar going into the post season.
On to our local teams let’s break em down.
Nipawin Hawks 1-1 at the Showcase.
It looked like the Nipawin Hawks were the Hawks everyone had talked about when they played Weyburn Brody Hoffman was outstanding against the Wings didn’t have much help from the back end but when if you listened to the broadcast the Hawks did have chances didn’t get the bounces it’s been the story for them this year, Weyburn got bounces played well not taking aything away from Dwight McMillan’s crew but if Nipawin gets a goal in the second this game wasn’t over by a long shot but a loss was a loss but they’d rebound in a big way.

As the Humboldt Broncos came for their first game of the showcase I thought it would be ugly but the Defensive play of the Hawks was the best they played all season they blocked a pile of shots against the Broncos and got bounces winning 6-2, The line of Jonathon Ceci, Matt Spafford and Tyler Pawlawski really lit things up especially Ceci who should have been player of the week getting 5 points in the game and all lines did their job, Brendan Tash, Darius Cole were work horses for Doug Johnson’s crew an it paid off and a thinned D-core got the job done as well and Stephen Klein got his first win in the SJHL and it was one for the ages absolutely stunning the top line of Jeremy Boyer, Justin Buzzeo and Matt Glowa in their tracks.

Then Kliener did it last night against Humboldt again at the cage a solid outing and same story and outcome in a 6-3 win and two straight for the Hawks, it will be interesting what happens from now until Christmas then from December 31st to January 1oth for Nipawin.
Humboldt Broncos 1-1 at the Showcase
The Broncos of course got off to that bad start against the Hawks, Tim Klimoosco Assistant Coach of the Broncos said after the game that the Green and Gold were gripping the sticks tonight and trying to be fancy and from my view that looked to be the way things had been going as the Broncos had struggled going into the weekend,

The best player all weekend was Logan Sproule and Josh Roach playing 2 solid games not just one that I’ll get to that in a second Matt Hrynkiw didn’t help his cause in net obviously there was a couple of goals he should have had but Dean Brockman stands by his crew when no one else does and Hrynkiw will get better (He has to come 2012 or it could be a problem for the Broncos)and started him in hopefully rebound game against Nipawin last night didn’t get much help again.
In the 11AM Game (By the way who the hell schedules 11AM games is this Atom C?) The Broncos hit the Notre Dame Hounds early and often for a 5-2 win the Hounds D-core which most teams in the league say they have the best defense in the league just ran out of gas and gave the Broncos an early scare in the game but Ward Suzuki coming off his 2 game suspension got 2 big goals one even strength and a beauty shorthanded he was the best player for them on that day and Logan Sproule had another gem on the back end.

Andrew Bodnarchuk is getting better I don’t think he’s back to MVP form or anything but he is the number one goalie in Humboldt. They played well against a maybe tired Flin Flon team 5-0 win over the Bombers but a win is a win and everything worked for them. People have been asking me and I’m not the guy to comment but they ask will Dean Brockman sell farm by Jan 10th.

Dean believes in his crew and what does he have to lose in hindsight… they’ll probably finish 3-4 in the league with his young crew and the 20 year olds but if he can get something for next year pending on the situation that might have changed as Josh Roach broke his arm at the CJHL Prospects game a couple of days ago I don’t think we’ll see much movement unless the Broncos really fall of and I mean really fall off their great start has saved them right now but the clock is ticking no doubt about it in Humboldt another interesting situation in the Bauer Conference.
Melfort Mustangs 1-1 at the Showcase.
The Mustangs were an interesting team that played different hockey at times especially in the Yorkton game lines were moving the puck but they didn’t dump and chase as much as they usually do and it lead to 107 turnovers in the neutral zone and it looked like they were a little nervous at the showcase but they still attacked well and ran into a strong Devin Peters in net for the Terriers, the Goaltending Duel made the showcase for many including most broadcasters still sticking around and it was the best goalies in the SJ with Charles Corsi and Devin Peters after the game Corsi had a couple of scouts come talk to him about next year in the NCAA circuit.

Head Coach Darrell Mann said they didn’t play their best game as a team which surprised me a lot because they did outshoot them in periods 2 and 3 after getting out shot in the first which was the downfall as the Terriers scored twice. Game 2 was an interesting one Mann shuffled his lines alot as we didn’t see Brody Haygarth, Adam Wihak and Owen Roshcuk together and Jesse Mireau and Shawn Aschim were split up at times as well.

But they got off on a bad foot giving up the only goal in the firs to the Millionaire’s Brayden Metz but Jesse Enisz made some huge saves in the first but then the Blue, Green and White played Mustangs Hockey tight defensively and got plenty of chances against the Millionaires with Conner Bradshaw setting up the game winner in the 3rd to Brant Henry-Norton to give the Stangs an eventual 3-1 win.

Enisz played well got the first star from me in that game but it showed that the Mustangs can play when things aren’t the way they usually are prior to that game with the extensive line shuffling done by Darrell Mann. The Mustangs don’t play till Saturday against Weyburn a team they beat in nail bitter way back when they swept their 3 game Southern Road Trip on a Wihak shorthanded goal and Charles Corsi starting all three games and winning all three. The Mustangs new players in Scott Brkich, Devin Ballness, Spener Mault, Sterling Bear and Jordan Bauer are still learning the system come February if the Mustangs get their couple other guys they want for the pushed run to the championship they will be tough to beat.
So that was the weekend it was at the showcase I just wish more scouts were at the event it wasn’t bad could have had a lot more scouts in attendance it could have been even better. I just want to thank Rob Hart voice of the Flin Flon Bombers who did colour for me this weekend, along with the team’s coaching staff and players for interviews that weekend, Dan O’Conner voice of the Battlefords North Stars for great bullshit sessions in between games and getting me on his sports fix show Monday Dan great job there, Chris Brinklow opted all my games it’s a greasy job but someone has to do it thanks again Big Guy and I want to thank all of those who listened to me during the weekend I greatly appreciate it.
I’ll be back sooner rather then later with more SJHL, LLHL and other stuff as we head into Christmas. Till then take care and the Leafs (except Darryl Sittler) still suck. E-mail me at gino.depaoli@cjvr.com or Tweet Me yes Tweet Me at gdp74

A Big Month For Local SJHL Teams

Happy New Year Everyone,
It’s been a good Christmas it was nice to be home with the family again and visiting friends, wish I could have stayed home longer but thats how the cookie crumbles.
Let’s talk SJHL in December and early January 2011. The Nipawin Hawks were the second hottest team in the league in December winning 6 of 8 and putting pressure on the Battlefords North Stars yes with their losses to Melfort this past weekend it makes it a little harder but Doug Johnson’s crew has a chance to get into that 5th and final playoff spot in the Bauer Conference.

The Hawks were offensive juggernauts before the break it all came from their first line of Tyler Pawslawski, Matt Spafford and Jonathon Ceci getting the majority of points. During their span of points Spafford jumped to the top 10 in scoring (Currently 11th now) while Ceci moved to 15th. Ceci had a good month and that got him the RBC player of the month award 22 points in 9 games winning against some tough teams in Humboldt,  La Ronge and Yorkton. Congrats to him.

Also Stephen Klein the 17 year old from Saskatoon Klein was 4-1 in December with a goals against average of 3.69 and a save percentage of .907. One of Klein’s four wins was one of the goaltending performances of the year in the SJHL as he stopped 52 of 54 shots in a victory over La Ronge. I was there unreal performence from him great kid and wants to get better all the time great future for him and is a good student too so wouldn’t be suprisied if we saw his name on a commitment list to a Ivy League School in the future.
Melfort Mustangs have been a powerhouse of late and have gt some more fire power. They acquired Brenden Wall from the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL a SOLID d-man for Darrell Mann’s crew going forward, they also acquired Nick Angelo who was outstanding in his debut on New Year’s Eve sniping his first as a Mustang  just adds another dynamic to the roster shooting on Brody Hoffman and wiring it is no easy task.

Angelo was playing along side Jesse Mireau and Sean Aschim might the fit for that line. Also it’s been great goaltending by Charles Corsi but also of Jesse Ehnisz who is getting more starts which is trouble for anyone in a playoff match-up as a healthy Charles Corsi is a goaltender that can go far in the playoffs.  Darrell Mann will be looking for one more player come the January 10th trade deadline who that is remains to be seen lot of rumors going out there.
As it looks right now in the Bauer Conference
1. La Ronge
2. Melfort
3. Humboldt
4. Flin Flon
5. North Battleford
6. Nipawin
It’s going to be tight near the top I think the amount of games the Stars have played may haunt them if Nipawin can shake off the Melfort sweep they can make that survivor series spot it won’t be easy but thats the way the Hawks roll these days and its worked.

The Mustangs will make a run at the top spot in the Bauer it will come to who goes on a mini slide first because La Ronge and Melfort have been good and Melfort is getting better by the hour. Humboldt is in that third spot for now but they could end up anywhere from there they can jump with their talents or if they sell they might fall into the survior series spot or even out depending on how things go. RBC is on the mind of Dean Brockman at least for the next 7.5 days.
I will keep everyone up to date on deadline day as teams make moves as the best I can its tough to hear official words on things I’m sure we’ll be on the phones alot that day.
That’s gonna do it for this post e-mail me at gino.depaoli@cjvr.com or Tweet Me @gdp74 guess what the 74 in my name stands for??? Until then enjoy Take Er Easy and The Toronto Maple Leafs really do suck. Don’t believe me look at the standings.
